Your Support in a Special Way
July 2, 2013
Greetings Family, Friends, Patrons, Supporters, etc.,
I hope that everyone is having an exciting and restful summer. My youngest daughter, Briana and I traveled to Columbus, OH to conduct the Urban Strings Youth Orchestra’s 2nd annual Summer Camp. We had a great time. They will be joining Sinfo-Nia in Nashville, TN July 27th for the National Association of Negro Musicians (NANM). This trip is open only to the Advanced Orchestra students that take part in our two-week Camp. Then they are planning to come to Atlanta to join us for our Fall Benefit Concert. This will be our urban youth orchestra network in action.
Last Tuesday, June 25, 2013 marked the Still Waters Youth Sinfo-Nia’s 23rd Anniversary. Now we begin year number 24 with our annual two-week Summer Academy will begin on Monday morning, July 8, 2013 at 8:30 PM at First Congregational Church located at 105 Courtland St., ATL 30303. It runs Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM with the last day (July 19th) ending in our Camp Concert. We have a number of students who have already paid tuition and registered. We always get quite a few to register on the first day of Camp.
We are looking forward to two big events that will take place during our Camp:
- A Workshop by recording artist and 5-time Grammy nominee, Ashanti Floyd, also known as “The Mad Violinist.” He has been busy recording for some more recording artist (to add to the list of the ones he has already recorded with – he will update us during Camp when he comes). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NH3NZdxkEsM
- A television performance, which will be shown all over the world. We will have more details soon. We will need the help of parents who can come to our Camp a certain time of day to pick up their children and transport others to the television studio. That time might be around 3:30 PM or 4:00 PM.
Both opportunities will open up more doors for our students, especially to the recording and music video industry. As you know, Ashanti’s workshop last summer led to a music video recording this spring. He is already composing more music, which may involve Sinfo-Nia as well. He is getting a lot of positive feedback from our “Battle Field” video. He has over 15,000 views worldwide on YouTube.
We would appreciate your assistance: I am asking for your support for our program this summer in a special, unique way. For the remainder of the week, please talk to your friends, family members, co-workers, co-worshippers, etc. about Sinfo-Nia’s Summer Academy (Camp). Some of them may have children who are of school-age (elementary through high school, plus college). Please make copies of the attached flier and post them up on bulletin boards at work, school, place of worship, community centers, etc., and have some available to pass out. Our hours fit most of the work schedules of parents where they can drop off their children as early as 7:30 AM and pick them up as late at 6:00 PM. They may be people you know who are looking for another camp for their children to attend. Sinfo-Nia is certainly the place for a wonderful, music, and cultural experience.
Sinfo-Nia has a structured program for those students who are (or wish to become) serious musicians. That does not necessarily mean as college music majors or minors. Music (especially orchestral music) is a bridge to academic success, which leads to high academic achievement whereas music students are more likely to earn college academic scholarships in addition to music. Sinfo-Nia’s unique repertoire of music and motivating structured curriculum in a nurturing environment is a great place for students with musical talent. Of course we offer strings (violin, viola, cello, and double bass) on all three levels of instruction – beginning, intermediate, and advanced. Right now, for woodwinds, brass, and percussion, we only offer instruction on the advanced level.
We are looking forward to another great summer camp as we keep the tradition of a proud heritage and high musical achievement. Also, please talk to your friends, relatives, etc. and invite them to our Summer Camp Concert, which will take place on Friday, July 19, 2013 at 6:00 PM. Tickets will be $15 for adult and $10 for child. And please attend yourself (bring family and friends). Our hit song in memory of legendary gospel singer, Inez Andrews who passed away recently, “Lord, Don’t Move My Mountain” is a show-stopper. We have so much exciting music to perform and a short time to learn it. We will have tickets at the door. Have a wonderful day.
Sincerely,
David E. Robinson, III
