Buckle your seatbelt as your Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra takes you on a trip around the world with music! In this Benard L. Maas Foundation Family Concert, cosponsored by St. Joseph Mercy Health Service with further support from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts, you’ll learn about music traditions from North and South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. With special guest violinist Adé Williams, 14-year-old first place laureate of the Junior Division at the 2012 Sphinx Competition, the A2SO will perform pieces by composers from Copland to Akpabot to Sibelius and more. This exciting whirlwind tour of music will take place March 17th at 4:00 pm at the Michigan Theater, with pre-concert activities beginning at 2:30 pm. This concert is part of the area-wide collaboration of Understanding Race, part of the Smithsonian Institution touring exhibit.
Appearing with the A2SO for the first time is 14-year-old violinist Adé Williams. Williams, who studies at the Music Institute of Chicago, won first place in the Junior Division at the 2012 Sphinx Competition, and has successfully competed in many other performance competitions since 2005. She performed in a 14-city tour with the Sphinx Virtuosi, internationally soloing in countries such as Switzerland and Bermuda in 2011. Her 2004 orchestral debut at the age of six was with the Chicago Sinfonietta as that orchestra’s youngest-ever soloist. Williams will be performing the 3rd movement of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto.
Beginning at 2:30 p.m. there will be a bounty of family-friendly activities including an Instrument Petting Zoo, as well as activities with our community partners such as the Ann Arbor Hands-on Museum, Ann Arbor Art Center, or the U-M Museum of Natural History.
All the pieces you’ll hear at the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra’s final family concert of the Benard L. Maas Foundation Family Concert Series will show you what the Joy of Music in the Key of A2 is all about. Don’t miss out; order your tickets today for March 17th at 4:00 pm at the Michigan Theater.
